Boeing seeking prize US Airways order

Read ArticleArticle Source: Seattle Post-Intelligencer

If Airbus lands US Airways for the A350-XWB, it will mark the biggest single success to date for the Airbus challenger to the 787...and that is success that is badly needed. Airbus has a better than even shot at the title, but there persist whispers that Boeing may yet pull out a surprise...

This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

This would be a big gain for Boeing if it happened, but an even bigger loss for Airbus. I don't see any other American airlines buying the A350 (except maybe United or Northwest, and I would think it would be far more probable that USAirways than those two).

I want to see the A350 program succeed, but they are just so far behind and they still don't have a real/"promisable" aircraft yet.

The A350-XWB is going to be a great plane, no doubt...but will it be a great plane for enough customers in time? The order cycle favours the 787 and it is hard to see how the single airframe A350-XWB can really take the fight effectively to the 787 and the 777. That said, the 777 will need to be heavily updated by Boeing to compete against the bigger versions of the Airbus offering...

That's for total sure. Especially when/if Emirates gets involved with the A350WXB. If they get what they want, the 777 will be in for a problem.

The 777 has been a huge winner for Boeing and may still be, but again it depends on what sort of updates Boeing can give it. The GenX engines are a key advantage, but Boeing needs to start lowering the plane's weight and that will be tough...
